Beginnings

Ron McCormack began his architectural career in 1972, when he graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Architecture, going on to become a licensed architect in 1976. During his first eight years in the profession, he interned with three architectural firms, then rose to the role of project architect with firms in Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin. In 1982, Mr. McCormack founded his own firm, McCormack Associates Architects, in Rockwall, Texas. Projects in those years included multi-family, residential, church, and office buildings.

In 1990, Mr. McCormack closed that firm and returned to his Midwest roots, and, in 1992, founded McCormack + Etten Architects, LLP, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in partnership with Ken Etten. M+E grew and thrived for 32 years, completing an extensive and well-known portfolio of work in multiple states and in multiple project types, including schools, municipal buildings, churches, libraries, recreational facilities, golf club houses, banks, equestrian facilities, adaptive re-use projects, office buildings, light industrial, restaurants, retail, multi-family, and custom high-end residential. Custom residential design became their trademark and most prolific building form, with M+E designing hundreds of unique custom homes for lakefront, golf course, ocean front, and estate properties, as well as numerous renovation and facelift projects, giving new life and character to dated structures.

In 2024, McCormack + Etten finally closed its doors in Lake Geneva. Ken Etten retired from the profession and remained local, enjoying family and a busy retirement schedule. Ron McCormack became licensed in Hawaii in 2018, designed and built a new home on the Big Island of Hawaii in the Lower Puna District, and moved there in 2024.

In Hawaii, Mr. McCormack has returned to private practice, retaining the same firm name that he began in Texas: McCormack Associates Architects. Mr. McCormack continues to specialize in custom residential design, adapting to appropriate regional styles and the tropical climate demands of Hawaii. Over the years, Mr. McCormack has always enjoyed designing in a wide variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary. Hawaii presents an exciting new challenge and chapter for his design repertoire.

Mr. McCormack is an actively licensed Architect in Hawaii, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and can obtain a license in most all states thru NCARB reciprocity.
